The short version
We are a marketplace, not a builder. Buyers commission work from independent builders; the contract for the work is between those two people, and we hold the money in the middle until the work is accepted.
Money is released in stages. You have 7 days to review each stage and 14 days after DELIVERY to review the final one. Say nothing and it releases automatically.
We take 8% of what a builder withdraws and 3.5% from the buyer to cover card processing. Builders set their own shipping prices and arrange their own shipments.
This summary is here to help you find things. It is not the agreement, and where it differs from the text below, the text below is what applies.
1 Who we are, and what we do
KOMPLETE ASSEMBLY LLC operates Komplete Assembly, a marketplace where people commission scale model kit builds from independent builders. Our registered address is 1096 Inwood Ter, Fort Lee, NJ 07024. You can reach us at help@kompleteassembly.com.
We are not the builder. We do not build, paint, or finish anything. When you commission work, the agreement to do that work is between you and the builder. What we provide is the place you find each other, the escrow that holds the money until the work is accepted, and a process for when the two of you disagree.
This matters for what you can expect from us. We are responsible for running that machinery honestly. We are not responsible for the quality of somebody else’s painting, and we cannot make a builder finish a model.
2 Accounts
You need an account to commission work or to sell. You must give accurate information, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think somebody else has got into your account.
You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live. We do not knowingly take accounts from anybody under 16.
Handles are permanent once retired. If you change your @name or close your account, the old handle is never released to anybody else. That is deliberate: old links keep pointing at the right place, and nobody can take a departed builder’s name and inherit their reputation.
3 Commissioning work
A buyer describes what they want. A builder replies with a quote setting out the price, the stages, what each stage delivers, and what evidence they will provide for it. Accepting a quote creates the agreement between you two, on the terms in that quote.
Whose kit it is matters. A commission is either builder-sourced, where the builder buys the kit, or buyer-supplied, where you send them yours. If you send your own, the builder photographs its condition on arrival. Those photographs are what settles an argument about damage later, so they are worth looking at when they appear.
A quote can be revised until it is accepted. Once accepted and funded, changing the scope means agreeing it with the builder; neither of you can change the deal unilaterally.
4 Money, and who holds it
We hold funded money in escrow. When you fund a commission, the money leaves your card and is held against that order. It is not the builder’s until a stage is released, and it is not ours at any point except for our fee.
Payments are processed by Stripe, and payouts to builders go through Stripe Connect. We do not see or store your card number. Using this site to pay or be paid means agreeing to Stripe’s terms as well as ours.
What we charge. Buyers pay a processing fee of 3.5% on the funded total, which covers card processing. Builders pay a withdrawal fee of 8% on the amount they withdraw, charged once, when they withdraw. Nothing is deducted when a stage is released. Both fees are shown before you commit to anything.
New builders have part of each release held. Until a builder has completed 3 orders, we hold 10% of the item or work share of each release for 30 days. Shipping and kit purchases are never held. This exists because a chargeback can arrive weeks after a build is delivered, and without a hold the money is already gone. When the period passes, the held amount becomes part of the builder’s balance to withdraw, automatically.
5 Stages, review, and automatic release
Work is delivered in stages. When a builder submits one, you are told, and you can approve it, ask for changes, or open a dispute.
Silence releases the money. If you do nothing for 7 days on an intermediate stage, it is approved automatically and the builder is paid for it. The final stage gives you 14 days, and that clock starts when the parcel is DELIVERED rather than when it was posted or submitted.
This is the single most important thing to understand about how we work. A builder who has done the work should not have to chase a buyer who has lost interest, and a buyer who is unhappy has to say so within the window.
Changes. You can ask for changes up to 2 times per stage. A builder has 7 days to respond to a change request before it escalates to us.
6 Shipping, and insurance we insist on
Builders arrange their own shipping. They set their own prices per destination, choose their own carrier, and post the parcel themselves. We do not buy labels, do not own the shipment, and do not set the price.
We ask for a tracking number and follow it. When the carrier reports delivery, the final review window opens.
Insurance is a condition of our protection, not a suggestion. Above $100.00 we recommend the parcel is insured. At or above $500.00 we require it. If a build worth that much is lost or damaged and the builder did not insure it as required, we will decide the dispute in the buyer’s favour. Builders should read that sentence twice.
We do not ship everywhere. Some destinations are excluded because of sanctions, and others because the risk of loss or fraud is too high to place on either of you.
7 When you disagree
If a stage is not what was agreed, open a dispute rather than letting the clock run out. Opening one freezes the money for that stage.
We will ask both of you for your account and for evidence. Photographs taken at the time carry more weight than descriptions written afterwards, which is why the process asks for them at each stage.
If you cannot agree, we decide. An arbitrator from Komplete Assembly reviews what both sides provided and rules on where the money goes: to the buyer, to the builder, or split. That decision is final within this platform. It does not take away any right you have to go elsewhere.
We are not neutral about evidence we asked for and did not get. A party who was required to document something and did not will usually lose the point that documentation would have settled.
8 Chargebacks
Raising a chargeback with your bank instead of opening a dispute here takes the decision out of a process designed for model kits and gives it to one designed for retail fraud, and it holds up the builder’s money while the bank decides.
If you chargeback an order you received and kept, we may recover the amount from you and may close your account. If you have a genuine problem, the dispute process is faster and more likely to get you what you actually want.
For builders: the money from that order is held until the bank decides. When a buyer’s bank reverses a payment, the amount you received from that order, up to the amount reversed, is held from your balance. Any of it still in the new-seller hold stops counting down meanwhile. If your Available Balance cannot cover it, your balance becomes negative, and you cannot withdraw until your future earnings cover it.
If the bank decides for you, the held money is returned, and any new-seller hold carries on from where it stopped. If the bank decides for the buyer and the reason is about the item (not received, not as described, defective, or a refund that was not processed), the held money is deducted from your balance to cover the loss, together with the dispute fee charged to us. If nothing from that order had reached you, nothing is deducted and we carry the fee. Your balance may become negative, and it is recovered from your future earnings. If the reason is fraud, such as a stolen card or a charge the cardholder does not recognise, or any other reason that is not about the item, we carry the loss and the fee, and the held money is returned to you. The same applies when an arbitrator here has already decided a dispute on the order.
9 Getting paid
Builders are paid into a Stripe connected account. Setting one up means giving Stripe identity and bank details directly; we never see them.
We can currently pay builders in 9 countries. If yours is not among them you can still use the rest of the site, and you can tell us where you are so we know which country to open next.
Withdrawals are reviewed before they are sent. This is a fraud control and it is not personal.
10 What you may not do
Do not sell counterfeit kits or pass off somebody else’s work as your own. Do not use the site to launder money, and do not arrange payment outside it to avoid our fee, which removes the escrow protection for both of you and is grounds for closing both accounts.
Do not post other people’s photographs as your own work, do not harass anybody, and do not scrape the site.
Direct messages are checked automatically for attempts to arrange payment away from the platform. The check warns the sender: it does not block, delay, edit or delete a message. When it matches, we file a report naming the sender for a moderator to read, the same as if somebody in the conversation had reported it themselves.
11 Your content
Your photographs and your words stay yours. By posting them you give us permission to show them on the site and to use them to promote the platform. A completed build is only published to your portfolio if the buyer agrees.
Kommunity posts are public. So are your profile, your portfolio and your listings. Anyone can see them, including people who are not signed in, and anyone can link to them or share them on other platforms. We may share them on our own accounts on other platforms, such as Instagram, with credit to you.
Search engines and AI services read our public pages with automated crawlers. What they collect can appear in their search results and answers, and their operators may use it to train AI models. We allow this on purpose, because it is how people find the builders here. Do not post anything on a public page that you do not want seen and copied this way. Your orders, messages, earnings and account pages are not public and are closed to crawlers.
We can remove content that breaks these terms. We would rather tell you why.
12 Ending the agreement
You can close your account at any time. If you have a commission in progress, it has to finish first: the other person has paid or is owed, and abandoning it would leave them with nobody to deal with and money in escrow.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If money is held for you when that happens, it is still yours and we will return it, less anything owed.
Closing your account does not delete records of money that moved between you and somebody else. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is kept and why.
13 What we are and are not responsible for
We provide the marketplace as it is. We do not promise it will never be unavailable, and we do not promise that any particular builder will do good work.
What we are responsible for is running the escrow and dispute process as described here: holding funded money until it is due, releasing it on the rules above, and deciding disputes on the evidence.
We are not liable for the quality of a build, for a delay by a builder or a courier, or for anything you agree with somebody outside this site. To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to the fees we took on the order the claim is about.
14 Changes to these terms
We will post changes here with a new date at the top. If a change materially affects your rights we will tell you before it takes effect. Orders already funded run on the terms that were in force when they were funded.
15 Law
These terms are governed by the law of the state in which KOMPLETE ASSEMBLY LLC is organised, and the courts there have jurisdiction. Nothing here takes away consumer rights you have where you live that cannot be given up by agreement.
